Tropical Crops Genetic Resources Institute(TCGRI) of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences(CATAS) was established in 1958 and headquartered in Hainan, the largest free trade port(FTP) in China.
TCGRI is one of the research institutions administrated by CATAS. TCGRI mainly engages in the protection and innovative utilization of tropical crop germplasm resources, the mining and utilization of important genes, the research and development of new breeding technologies, the supporting technology of improving tropical crop varieties and methods, the research on variety standards and testing technology, and the conservation and healthy breeding of characteristics livestock and poultry resources in tropics.TCGRI delivers research-based solutions that solve major scientific and technological problems in tropical agriculture to improve tropical agricultural productivity and promote tropical agricultural development.
TCGRI involves 13 scientific research departments, namely Germplasm Resource Preservation Laboratory, Germplasm Resources Evaluation and Information Laboratory, Tropical Crop Cultivation Laboratory, Quality Standard and Testing Technology Laboratory, Tropical Fruit Tree Research Center, Winter Melon and Vegetable Research Center, Cassava Research Center, Tropical Flower Research Center, Prataculturae Research Center, Medicinal Plant and Health Research Center and the Animal Husbandry Research Center; and 6 management service departments including the General Office, the Science and Technology Department, and the Finance Department. TCGRI has a staff of 257 scientific researchers, including 76 PhDs. TCGRI has an area of 12,000m2 of office and laboratories, 200 hm2 of scientific research and experimental bases, and 20,000m2 of facility greenhouses. There are 41 scientific research platforms such as the National Tropical Plant Germplasm Resource Repository, the National Germplasm Resources Tropical Crops Mid-term Repository, and the National Tropical Forage Mid-term Backup Repository. A total of more than 32,000 germplasm resources of tropical crops represented by cassava, tropical fruit trees, and tropical flowers have been preserved, 107 new varieties have been cultivated, more than 100 advanced production technologies such as breeding, cultivation and processing have been developed, and more than 2,900 papers have been published. 131 national and international awards, provincial and ministerial awards have been obtained.
TCGRI pursues sustainable and efficient international cooperation and exchanges and has established a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with more than 40 scientific research institutions and international organizations, like the alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture(CIAT), Ministry of Agriculture and Animal of the Republic of Congo, Kasetsart University, Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute and etc mainly from Africa, Southeast Asia and South America.
