1. Brief Introduction to the Lab
The Germplasm Resources Evaluation and Information Research Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Lab’) engages in research concerning information, as well as phenotype and genotype identification of tropical crop germplasm resources. It has successively undertaken projects such as the construction of National Science and Technology Resource Sharing Service Platform of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the protection of tropical crop germplasm resources of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, major information operation and maintenance projects, provincial key research and development projects, and the building of innovation teams composed of members from academies.
The lab has formulated description specifications, data quality control specifications and data standards of 68 major tropical crop germplasm resources, systematically carried out phenotypic identification and evaluation of tropical crop germplasm resources; developed MNPs (Multiple Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers of rubber tree, cassava, coconut, mango, dragon fruit and cocoa; and established DNA molecular identification database of germplasm resources of major tropical crops.
The lab has set up the China Tropical Crop Germplasm Resources Information Network (http://ctcgris.catas.cn), which integrates data collection and management, information dissemination, and business services; as well as designed and built a big data platform for China's tropical crop germplasm resources and a QR code-based display and management system for rubber tree germplasm resources.
2. Research Team:
The Lab currently has 9 researchers, among which, 6 have senior titles, 2 have intermediate titles, and 3 are master tutors.
Prof. Li Qiong is the director of the lab, who is also a master tutor, concurrently serving as a member of the National Tropical Crop Variety Registration Committee, and a member of the Standardization Technical Committee of the Zhongguancun’s Science and Technology Resource Sharing and Service Innovation Alliance.
Vice Prof. He Yun is the deputy director of the lab and head of the Germplasm Resource Information Research Group.
3. Positioning of the Laboratory: Main Research Directions and Topics.
The lab consists of three research groups: Germplasm Resource Information Research Group, Phenotypic Evaluation Research Group, and Molecular Evaluation Research Group.
4. Research Progress:
The research group on the commonality of germplasm resources information has established the China Tropical Crop Germplasm Resources Information Network, designed and constructed the Germplasm Resources Big Data Platform of China Tropical Crops, and achieved the goal of managing multiple databases of various crops with one system, which can access numerical, text and image information, and has the functions of search query, classification, statistics, data mining, image display, etc.
A QR code-based display and management system for rubber tree germplasm resources has been designed and built. Through the Internet Information Network, data resources can be shared by the whole society, allowing agricultural scientists and producers to fully understand the characteristics of crop germplasm, improving breeding efficiency, and supporting government departments’ decisions concerning the protection and sustainable utilization of crop resources.
